Unto Us a Child is Born

Unto us a child is born,
to us a son is given.
Ungoverned despair shall be upon his heart
and the world’s brokenness abides there
and his name shall be called
Beloved Prince of God,
Blessed Son of a Blessed Root.
The zeal of the Lord will do this
though we conceive our own sin and error.
For another son was given,
and from that morn we have not lost
the thrill of hope in spite of ourselves.

Unto us a child is born,
to us a son is given.
My God, why have you forsaken him?
Why are you so far from saving him?
You are enthroned on our praises.
In you his fathers trusted,
and you delivered them.
They cried to you, and you delivered them.
Do not put him to shame.
We lay our trust at your feet once more.
Give the mild mother and tender child
silence and calm and heavenly peace.

Unto us a child is born,
to us a son is given.
And though we walk in darkness,
we have seen a great light.
Even in the darkness of the womb,
on him a light has shone.
O come to him, O come and save.
His hope, our peace defies the grave.
Disperse the clouds of gloom and death
and in one heart bind the joy
and faith of all mankind.
Make us this new heart.

Unto us a child is born,
to us a son is given.
We have ears to hear and eyes to see
them say that we trust in the Lord
and they ask what good is that trust?
Yet you are the one who holds him in the womb.
We still trust.  Be not far from us.
You do not despise the afflicted,
you do not hide your face.
We declare your goodness to our brothers,
and the families of the nations will remember.
Posterity will serve you, the coming generation will be told,
we proclaim your righteousness over the unborn.
We plead again for salvation.
You have done it.

Unto us a child is born,
to us a son is given.
We remember him with tears,
and we long to see him
that we might be filled with joy.
He was conceived in the faith of his mother.
His grandmother’s faith is surely knit into his heart.
And we share in his suffering for we have been called,
and we are not ashamed
for we have received good news of great joy.
Purpose and grace were manifest in another son,
the Son of Man, the Son of God,
who abolished death and brought life to light.
We suffer as we do for that glory.
We suffer as we do, with gladness and hope,
for God gave us a spirit not of fear
but of power and love and self-control.
